SketchUp for Engineers and Designers – Process-Oriented Course

This course is aimed at engineers and designers who want to use SketchUp to streamline their work with 3D modeling and visualization. The course is process- and workshop-oriented, focusing on how to work with SketchUp templates in your own projects to move from theory to practice more quickly.
Through hands-on exercises, we'll walk you through the features and tools you need to create accurate 3D models, manage imported drawings, and optimize your project workflow. Later parts of the course focus on design, camera settings, styles, shadows, fog, and presentation scenes so you can communicate your designs clearly to all stakeholders.
Course content
Part 1 – Basics and 2D–3D Templates
• Install a simple template with ready-made settings for scenes, styles, and camera settings.
• Manage workflow with groups, components, tags/layers, and scenes.
• Correct order and methods for drawing, scaling and modifying objects including Entity Info.
• Import and scale drawings in DWG, PDF and JPEG formats.
• Download objects from the 3D Warehouse and draw your own simple 2D shapes.
• Use the Scale & Tape tool for precision.
Part 2 – Project template and presentation
• Install a project template with 2D views (A, B, C, D) and corresponding 3D perspective and top view.
• Professional settings of views, styles, cameras and shadows for presentation scenes.
• Geotag the project and perform shadow analyses with real geolocation.
• Correct placement of imported DWG and image files in the model.
• Advanced management of tags, groups and components.
• Create your own 3D objects relevant to construction and engineering work.
Part 3 – Presentation and visualization
• Photograph houses or walls accurately for import as background images in SketchUp.
• Manage styles, shadows and fog for the best possible presentation.
• Import and use textures for realistic models.
• Optimize camera settings and camera placement for effective presentations.
• Printing and exporting presentable images and layouts.
• Tips on useful plugins for engineers and designers.
Part 4 – LayOut and support
• Easy introduction to LayOut – create professional drawing layouts and presentations.
• A ready-made LayOut template is included in the course for easier documentation.
• 1 year of support after the course
