How to export from SketchUp correctly?

When a model looks right in SketchUp but falls apart when exported, it's rarely the model that's the problem. It's often a matter of choosing the wrong file format, the wrong view, or the wrong settings. The question of how to export from SketchUp therefore has no single answer - it all depends on what the file will be used for afterwards.

For professionals, exporting is not a final push of a button. It is part of the delivery. A rendering, a DWG for production, a 2D graphic for a client presentation or a 3D model for another software have different requirements. The earlier you think about the final format, the less post-processing you will have.

How to export from SketchUp depending on the target?

The first thing you need to determine is what the recipient actually needs. Many export problems arise when you start with a format that feels familiar, rather than a format that fits your workflow.

If you are going to produce a drawing or a plan view for documentation, 2D export is often the right way to go. If the model is to be forwarded to CAD, visualization, manufacturing or coordination, a 3D export is required instead. And if you are just presenting a proposal to a customer, a well-composed image export can be better than sending the model itself.

In practice, there are three common paths in SketchUp: 2D graphics export, 3D model export, and 2D CAD export. Which one is right for you depends on the recipient, purpose, and how much information needs to be included.

Export 2D from SketchUp

If you need an image, elevation view, plan or perspective view, you normally go to File and then Export to 2D Graphics. There you choose a format such as PNG, JPG or PDF depending on your version and workflow.

PNG is often the safest choice when image quality is important. You get sharp lines and can often retain transparency in the background, which is useful in presentations and layout work. JPG is better suited when file size needs to be kept down, but the compression can negatively affect lines and textures.

Here, many people make the mistake of exporting directly from a random working view. For professional results, you first need to secure the camera. Choose the right projection - parallel projection for drawing-like views and perspective for presentations - and be sure to save the scene before exporting. This way you know that the view, style and shadow settings are reproducible.

Resolution is the next critical point. Standard settings are rarely sufficient if the image is to be used in print, quotation documents or larger presentations. Go into the export options and manually specify a higher resolution. If lines feel too thin or jagged, it is often not due to the model but because the export size is too low.

Export 3D model from SketchUp

When the model is to be transferred to other software, select File and then Export to 3D Model. Here the format choice is crucial.

DWG and DXF are often used when the recipient works CAD-based. IFC is relevant in BIM-related flows if information structure needs to be included. OBJ and FBX are common when the model is to be used for rendering, animation or other 3D environments . STL is mainly used for 3D printing or manufacturing-related processes. SKP can of course also be right if the recipient himself works in SketchUp.

What determines quality is not only the file format but how clean the model is before export. Loose geometries, misaligned surfaces, unnecessarily heavy components, and poor layer or tag structure quickly become a problem in the recipient's system. A model that works internally in SketchUp is not automatically a good delivery model.

A simple rule of thumb is to export as little as possible, but as much as is needed. If the recipient only needs a furniture group or a room, there is no benefit in sending the entire project with surroundings, shadow objects and decorative details. Smaller files are more stable, faster and easier to quality assure.

Consider units and orientation

Scale errors are a classic export problem. Therefore, always check the model's units before exporting and verify what units the recipient expects. A model drawn in millimeters but interpreted as meters quickly becomes expensive in both time and trust.

The same applies to axes and orientation. If the object ends up wrong in the receiving software, it is often because the model's coordinate system was not well thought out from the start. For products, furnishings and building parts, you benefit greatly from having a clear origin and logical direction before exporting.

Export DWG or DXF from SketchUp

For many professional users, this is the most common question behind how to export from SketchUp. This is especially true when the model is to be passed on to a designer, production or drawing base.

The important thing here is to distinguish between 2D-DWG and 3D-DWG. If the recipient is to have a plan, elevation or section-like view, it is often better to first set up the correct camera and then export a 2D graphic or 2D-CAD, depending on the needs. If the recipient is to work further in geometry, you need a 3D export instead.

For 2D CAD, the view needs to be clean. Turn off unnecessary elements, use the correct scene, and make sure you don't export a perspective when the recipient expects orthogonal information. For 3D CAD, components, groups, and level of detail need to be well thought out. Too much small detail often makes the file heavy without adding value.

There is also a practical trade-off here. A technically complete export is not always the most useful. If the recipient primarily needs outlines and main dimensions, a simplified model may be better than a fully textured and detail-heavy file.

Common problems when exporting from SketchUp

When the export does not turn out as expected, there are a few recurring reasons. One of the most common is that the styles in the model affect the result more than expected. Profile lines, shadows, textures and backgrounds can look good on screen but be wrong in a technical delivery. Therefore, adapt the style to the delivery, not to how you prefer to model.

Another problem is hidden objects and tags. If the wrong geometry is included, it is often because the scene is not updated correctly or objects are only temporarily hidden. Review visibility before exporting, especially in larger projects with many submodels.

Materials and textures are also an area where there is often misunderstanding. Some formats handle materials well, others do not. If textures are critical to the recipient, you need to ensure that the particular format chosen actually supports them in the required way. Otherwise, it is better to communicate that color and materials are only indicative.

Performance is the last big point. If the export crashes or becomes extremely slow, the model is often too heavy. Clean up unused components and materials, simplify geometry, and check imported objects. This step often saves more time than the export settings themselves.

A workflow that usually works

If you want a stable way to work, start with the delivery requirement and work backwards. Ask what the file will be used for, what program the recipient is using, and whether they need 2D, 3D, or just a visual presentation. Only then do you choose the format.

Then you prepare the model for that particular delivery. Clear out things that shouldn't be included, check units, secure views or scenes, and do a test export before sending the final file. That test export is often the difference between a safe delivery and an unnecessary support chain.

For teams that work repeatedly with the same type of deliverables, it makes sense to standardize this. The same scene logic, the same naming structure, the same export settings, and the same checkpoints save a lot of time over a year.
